Musk reveals new details of Tesla batteries: orders worth 1 billion knives

This week, Tesla executives revealed a number of new details about the company's "energy" business, the Tesla battery division, at the earnings analyst meeting. Whenever someone asks, which Tesla new product has achieved a total of 100,000 large orders worth about $1 billion? Many listeners who don't know much about the situation may answer: Is it Tesla's upcoming Model X? No, the correct answer is Tesla's new battery business a few months ago. It is also called Tesla Energy internally by Tesla.

At Tesla's earnings analyst conference call last week, CEO Elon Musk and company CTO Straubel disclosed many interesting details about the company's new battery business.

Tesla officially launched its battery products in May of this year, and its target audience includes institutions, enterprises, industrial sectors and family individuals. Tesla batteries allow users to store solar or electrical energy in the grid for a variety of other purposes.

Tesla's two battery products -- the small home-sized Powerwall and the large-scale commercial PowerPacks -- have begun small-scale production at the Tesla plant in Fremont, California.

Musk said at the analyst meeting that the production of Tesla batteries will be transferred to Tesla's super factory next year.

Tesla CTO Straubel also revealed that the first manufacturing equipment for the production of Tesla batteries will be installed in the Tesla super factory before the end of this year. By the first quarter of 2016, Tesla batteries will be mass-produced. At that time, the Tesla battery business is expected to achieve even more amazing development.

Mask said that the market demand for Tesla batteries is staggering, spreading like a virus, and becoming somewhat "out of control."

Tesla's Powerpacks and Powerwalls have made a total of 100,000 large orders worth about $1 billion (equivalent to about RMB 6.2 billion). These orders may contribute to the company's battery sales business in the fourth quarter of this year, contributing 40 million US dollars (equivalent to about 250 million yuan) to 45 million US dollars (equivalent to about 280 million yuan).

And this number is expected to be 10 times next year. According to Musk, Tesla's revenue in the battery business "is likely to reach $400 million to $450 million in a quarter."

After the year of 2016, its revenue is likely to jump to $1 billion in 2017.

“The orders for the battery business may double every year,” Musk said.

Perhaps, one day we can see that Tesla's battery business revenue will eventually exceed the sales of its automotive products?

Tesla achieved revenues of $955 million (equivalent to approximately RMB 5.93 billion) in the second quarter of this year, with most of it coming from sales of Tesla Model S.
