Toyota develops a full-solid-state battery electric vehicle for several minutes

Toyota is developing an electric car that will be built on a brand new platform that will use all-solid-state batteries, allowing it to charge in minutes.

In contrast, current electric cars use lithium-ion batteries. Even if they use fast charging technology, it takes 20 minutes to 30 minutes to complete the charge. Normally, the mileage is 300 kilometers to 400 kilometers.

According to sources, Toyota plans to start selling this electric car in Japan as early as 2022.

Toyota spokesman Kayo Doi said the company will not comment on specific product plans, but said the company plans to implement all-solid-state battery commercialization in the early 2020s.

As a zero-emission vehicle that can replace traditional automobiles, electric vehicles are popular around the world. Toyota is seeking to narrow the gap between Nissan and Tesla and other electric car leaders.

However, due to the stringent requirements for quality control and reliability in mass production, it remains to be seen whether Toyota can surpass its competitors.

Christopher Richter, a French auto analyst at CLSA, said, “There is still a long way to go from the successful development of a technology to mass production. The year 2022 is still far away and many changes may occur during the period.” The speed of adoption of electric vehicles depends to a large extent on battery costs.

At the end of 2016, Toyota established an independent electric vehicle business unit “EV Business Planning Department”, under the direct leadership of President Akio Toyoda, committed to the development of electric vehicles that have a longer range. It can be expected that Toyota plans to produce a pure electric vehicle based on C-HR models in China in 2019 as soon as possible, using lithium-ion batteries as its power source.

According to media reports, Toyota plans to begin mass production of electric vehicles in China, the world's largest auto market, by 2019 at the earliest, but will use lithium ion batteries based on the existing C-HR sports utility vehicles.

Reuters said that BMW and other auto makers are also developing all-solid-state batteries, and plans to put into mass production in the next 10 years.

Solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes rather than liquid electrolytes, which makes them safer than lithium-ion batteries currently on the market, but may also mean that power lithium battery separators will lose part of the market.
