According to a report from the Russian "Newswires" News Network on February 7, Canadian scientists recently published a groundbreaking study in the prestigious journal "Nature," revealing that a micro-crack system could potentially enhance the strength of glass by as much as 200 times. This discovery has sparked significant interest in the field of materials science.
To validate their hypothesis, researchers used a laser system to create tiny holes—just a few microns in diameter—on regular glass and then filled them with polyurethane. They found that while cracks in conventional glass typically lead to shattering, these controlled micro-cracks can actually strengthen the material. The mechanism works by distributing stress more evenly across the surface, preventing further damage.
The team also noted that this method of controlled damage causes the fracture edges to come together, reducing the likelihood of the glass breaking entirely. Scientists compared this approach to the natural structures found in animal teeth and shells, which are known for their exceptional durability. Although the micro-cracks are currently visible, the researchers believe they can be made smaller in future applications, making the process even more efficient.
In addition to this breakthrough, in February 2013, a team from Yale University developed a theory on non-shatterable soft glass plasticity, explaining how the mechanical properties of a material are influenced by its cooling rate. This research highlights the growing interest in creating stronger, more resilient materials through innovative techniques inspired by nature.
