Developed a small pump that can assist the artificial heart

A Japanese research team recently announced that they have developed a magnetically driven wireless compact pump that can be used for fully implanted assisted artificial hearts.

The small pump newly developed by the Tohoku University research team in Japan has only the size of a No. 2 battery (50 mm high and approximately 26 mm in diameter) and is used to assist an artificial heart and has the same function as the human heart. A cylindrical special magnet is used inside the implant. When the body is implanted in the body, when the magnetic force on the skin approaches, the magnet in the pump rotates like a propeller, thus exerting the function of delivering blood. Because it is a wireless device, there is no need to connect hoses, wires, etc. to the patient's body.

The team used this small pump to pilot an assisted artificial heart and experimented with three goats. The results confirmed that it worked properly. In the future, the research team will continue animal experiments to achieve clinical applications. (Reporter: Lan Jianzhong)
