Wenzhou Longwan cauliflower suffers serious pests due to the rainy weather

The rainy weather lasting nearly half a month has affected crops in many parts of Wenzhou. Yesterday, the pesticide network learned from the Yongxing Agricultural Park in Longwan District that the thousands of acres of cauliflower planted here were affected by pests and diseases because of the long rainy weather.

In the vegetable garden of the farmer Wenliubin, the pesticide net saw that some of the cauliflower roots had rotted, and he and his wife took advantage of the rare weather to fight for the crops. "We have contracted 12 acres of cauliflower here. This year, there are too many rains and vegetables are not growing well. Many vegetables have suffered from pests and diseases. My vegetable plots are low-lying and the yield is at least half lost." Wen Liubin said with regret . Wen Liubin’s wife picked up a cauliflower and said, “These dishes look green and green. In fact, the roots have been rotted and stopped growing. This batch of cauliflowers can be picked in 20 days.”

It is reported that in the past two years, the sales of cauliflower in Wenzhou market has been popular. Many farmers have expanded their planting area. Last year, the total area of cauliflower planted in Longwan District reached more than 3,000 mu, and this year's planting area expanded to nearly 8,000 mu. According to preliminary estimates, due to serious pests and diseases, the yield per mu will be reduced by more than 20% compared with last year.

Also affected is rice. Yesterday, in the large rice fields in the Yongxing Agricultural Park, many farmers were rushing to harvest rice on sunny days. The farmer Fang Dejie has less than one acre of paddy fields and can be harvested in a sunny day. And the large rice farmers like Wang Jinliang who have more than 500 acres can only drain the weather on a sunny day to minimize losses. "The mature rice is rotted by water, so drain it today and harvest it in a few days." Wang Jinliang said.

Yang Jian, deputy station director of Longwan District Agricultural Station, told us that “long-term rain caused too many cauliflowers to eat too much. The increase in temperature compared with previous years also shortened the growth period of cauliflower from 80 days to 60 days, and the cauliflower diameter decreased. The selling will be affected.” Yang Jian suggested that the majority of farmers, in the continuous rainy weather, should focus on strengthening the ditch drainage and prevent pests.
