It is common knowledge that every driver should wear a seat belt while driving. It's not only a legal requirement but also a crucial safety measure. However, recent findings by a reporter have revealed an alarming trend in the Weifang Auto Decoration Market: a device known as the "safety clasp" has become increasingly popular among car owners. This metal plug, inserted into the seat belt, is used to bypass the car's alarm system, allowing drivers to avoid the sound of the seat belt reminder for convenience.

On April 2nd, the reporter visited several car accessory stores and car wash shops in the city and discovered that almost all of them were selling these so-called "safety buckles." The price range varied from a few dollars to over a hundred, with some made entirely of metal and others designed to match different car brands. Some even featured logos that closely resembled the original seat belt mechanisms, making it hard to distinguish between genuine and fake products.

At a car wash shop on Fushou Street, various styles of safety buckles were displayed in the window. The shop owner told the reporter that demand for these devices had significantly increased in recent months. Many customers preferred to purchase ones that matched their car’s design, hoping to eliminate the seat belt warning sound without drawing attention.

A quick search on Taobao for "car safety clasp" returned over 10,000 results. Prices ranged from just a few dollars to over a thousand, and many listings showed high sales volumes, indicating widespread popularity.

Despite its growing use, traffic authorities have issued warnings against using such devices. They emphasize that these are deceptive and pose serious safety risks. If a driver fails to wear a seat belt, sudden braking or sharp turns could cause occupants to be thrown forward due to inertia, leading to severe injuries.

According to the "Law of the People's Republic of China on Road Traffic Safety," drivers who fail to use a seat belt while driving on urban expressways may be fined 50 yuan and have two points deducted from their license. On other highways, the same penalty applies if seat belts are not used properly. Additionally, all front-seat passengers are required to wear seat belts while the vehicle is in motion.
