Stay Alert: Recognize the Signs of Trouble

When driving, it's important to pay attention to any unusual smells or sounds coming from the vehicle. If you notice any strange odors or noises, let the driver know immediately and suggest stopping the engine. The term "check" refers to continuously monitoring the rearview mirrors for any signs of danger. If you see smoke, stop the vehicle right away and evacuate as quickly as possible.

Use Fire Extinguishers and Locate Emergency Switches

In the event of a fire on a bus, passengers should act fast and use the onboard fire extinguisher, which is typically located near the driver’s seat. Most buses are equipped with four emergency switches—two on the inside and two on the outside of the front and rear doors. In an emergency, pull the switch in the direction indicated to open the door and allow for quick evacuation.

Stay Calm and Find the Nearest Exit

If a fire breaks out, your first priority is to find the nearest exit, such as a door or window, and leave the vehicle as quickly as possible. If you're in a closed compartment, look for the life-saving hammer, usually found near the windows, to break the glass and escape. If no hammer is available, use any hard object to smash the window and get out safely.

Escape Through the Window Using a Fire Hammer

If the main doors are blocked, breaking a window is your best option. A fire hammer is usually located between the two side windows. Avoid hitting the front and rear windshields, as they are the strongest parts of the car. Instead, aim for the corners of the side windows, which are easier to break. Always try to break the nearest window and then turn off the engine if possible.

Cover Your Nose and Mouth, and Roll if on Fire

Firefighters advise that during a bus fire, people should not block the exits. If the door is still accessible, cover your face with a piece of clothing or a cloth to protect yourself from smoke and rush out. If you're already escaping and your clothes catch fire, roll on the ground to smother the flames. If someone else is on fire, remove your own clothing or use a blanket to help put out the fire.
