British designers are working with researchers at Cambridge University to develop this bio-photovoltaic (BPV) device that can harness the photosynthesis of algae and moss to produce renewable energy. Not only do these plants grow quickly, they also require very little sunlight and water. Although these organisms participate in the photosynthesis process, the energy they generate can power photovoltaic panels. Designers believe that this technology is expected to be comparable to silicon-based solar panels in the next 5-10 years. Biophotonics is widely used, such as a bio-photonic moss table that lights up a lamp.
