Official data showed that exports rose 7.9% last year to 2.21 trillion US dollars; imports increased to 1.95 trillion US dollars. As a result, total trade reached $4.16 trillion, an increase of 7.6% from 2012.
The annual trade surplus was US$259.75 billion, a year-on-year increase of 12.8%. But China’s trade surplus in December fell short of expectations, at $25.6 billion, lower than Reuters’ $31.15 billion forecast and lower than November’s $33.8 billion. Last month's exports increased by 4.3% year-on-year, much lower than the 12.7% growth rate in November. Exports rose by 8.3% in December, exceeding market expectations of 5.3% growth, and imports rose by 5.3% in November.
Analysts believe that although the trade surplus data is less than expected, the strong growth of imports indicates that the Chinese economy is still healthy.
Geoff Lewis, global market analyst at JPMorgan Asset Management, said, "The growth in exports shows that China's domestic demand is stronger than people's expectations. We believe that the Chinese economy will still grow by 7% to 7.5% this year."
He said, “The fluctuations of China’s trade data are very large at this time of the year, which is related to the Spring Festival effect. Therefore, it is not necessary to pay too much attention to monthly data.â€
