The lipstick plant, also known as Aeschynanthus, is a tropical beauty that thrives in warm and humid conditions. It prefers indirect light, making it perfect for a shady window with good air circulation. The ideal temperature range for growth is between 20°C and 30°C. If the temperature drops below 15°C, it's important to move the plant indoors to a warmer area to prevent frost damage and yellowing leaves.
These plants are more drought-tolerant than water-loving ones, so avoid overwatering. However, during the summer months, misting the leaves can help increase humidity around the plant. Since they bloom for long periods—especially in summer and autumn—it's essential to provide consistent watering and nutrients. You can add decomposed organic fertilizer at the base and apply a liquid flower fertilizer once a month during the growing season for best results.
When grown indoors or displayed hanging, lipstick plants typically last 1-2 months before the flowers fade. At this point, you can trim the long, drooping branches to encourage new growth from the base, which will lead to more blooms in the following seasons. After pruning, you can use the cuttings to propagate new plants. Cut the stems into 8-10 cm sections, remove the lower leaves, and place them in moist sand at a slant. Keep them in a shaded, cool location, and roots should form within about a month.
For greenhouse propagation, cuttings can be shorter—about 2-3 cm with one pair of leaves. At room temperatures between 20°C and 25°C, with humidity above 50%, roots will develop within 10-15 days. When the stems grow longer than 30 cm, buds will appear, leading to beautiful new blooms.
