Many users find that the service life of these pumps is shorter than expected. The main reason often lies in a lack of understanding about the medium being transported and incorrect material selection.
Most standard stainless steel gear pumps are constructed with a 304 stainless steel body, while the gears are typically made from either 304 stainless steel or 2Cr13. These components usually undergo heat treatment or nitriding to improve their durability. Bearings are commonly made from stainless steel bushings combined with steel back sleeves, and the main shaft is generally 23Cr13. This combination works well for lubricating media, but may not be suitable for fluids containing impurities or those with poor lubricity.
If the pump is used with such media, the material’s hardness may not be sufficient, leading to reduced wear resistance and fatigue strength. If the gear pump and motor are not perfectly aligned, the internal components can wear out quickly. Once the shaft and gears are worn, it can cause misalignment, seal failure, and ultimately leakage.
In addition, stainless steel gear pumps are often used to handle acidic or alkaline media, which tend to have low viscosity. Due to the high thermal expansion coefficient of 304 stainless steel, manufacturers sometimes increase the internal clearance during assembly to prevent locking caused by temperature rise. However, this can lead to issues such as poor suction, insufficient head, and reduced efficiency when handling low-viscosity fluids.
