Watercress green cultivation management method

Douban Green Cultivation Method:

Watercress green thrives in soil rich in organic matter. A suitable potting mix can be made by combining 4 parts peat soil or humus soil, 2 parts sawdust, 1 part perlite or river sand, and 3 parts garden soil. During the growing season, it's important to maintain high humidity in the air. In hot weather, place the potted plants in a cool and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Regular watering is necessary, but be sure to mist the leaves to keep them vibrant. Although Douban green has some drought resistance, overwatering can lead to root rot. Water only when needed, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy.

In winter, reduce watering frequency and avoid using cold water. It’s best to use water that is close to room temperature. Fertilize every 2–3 weeks between May and September. During spring and summer, place the plant in a semi-shaded location, and in winter, move it to a sunny spot—just make sure it doesn’t get direct sunlight. The ideal winter temperature should be above 10°C. To maintain healthy foliage, repot every 2–3 years or replace the container as needed. When the plant reaches about 10 cm in height, gently pinch off the center to encourage bushier growth and a fuller shape.

Soilless Cultivation Method:

For soilless cultivation, a suitable substrate can be made using a mix of vermiculite, peat, and slag in a 1:1:1 ratio, or perlite, peat, and river sand in the same proportion. Use a foliage plant nutrient solution or a balanced flower fertilizer. When planting, add a layer of small stones or coarse sand at the bottom of the pot, place the seedling in the center, and then fill with the substrate. Water the first time until the excess drains out from the bottom tray. After that, water regularly, refilling 50–100 ml per week for small to medium pots. Keep the substrate moist and maintain a pH level around 6.5.

During the growing season, mist the stems and leaves once or twice daily to help maintain leaf color, especially during dry or hot periods. Watercress is quite shade-tolerant and can be placed in a bright, indirect light indoors year-round. In winter, it benefits from more sunlight. Keep the room temperature above 15°C, and reduce watering to prevent leaf rot. This method allows for easier maintenance and better control over nutrients and moisture levels, making it ideal for indoor gardening enthusiasts.
