By combining these with non-catalytically active enzyme molecules, the researchers successfully transferred the artificial iron-based active centers into the larger bioenzyme structure. The result is a semisynthetic hydrogenase that exhibits catalytic activity identical to its natural counterpart. This method offers significant advantages over traditional approaches. Enzymatic hydrogen production is more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, eliminating the need for costly precious metals as catalysts.
