The characteristics of smart grid development

In recent years, the term "smart grid" has become increasingly familiar to the public. In the near future, we may be able to choose electricity prices based on our needs and different time periods—this is just a small part of what a smart grid offers, specifically in terms of smart metering. During an interview, Zhang Wenliang, president of the China Electric Power Research Institute, discussed various aspects of smart grids, including their definition, characteristics, and the importance of their development. According to Zhang Wenliang, a smart grid is a modern power system that integrates information technology, communication technology, and computer systems with existing transmission and distribution infrastructure. It enhances energy efficiency, reduces environmental impact, improves power supply security and reliability, and minimizes losses during electricity transmission. These advantages make it a key component in the future of energy management. Generally, a smart grid possesses several key features: self-healing for stability and reliability, enhanced security against cyber threats, compatibility with diverse power generation resources, interaction with consumers, coordination within the power market, efficiency through asset optimization, high power quality, and integration with information systems. Zhang Wenliang believes that the development of Ultra High Voltage (UHV) power grids serves as a strong physical foundation for smart grid advancement. He emphasized that the most significant feature of UHV grids is their ability to transmit large amounts of power over long distances, which places higher demands on grid construction. As research and development on UHV grids continue, efforts are being made to build a grid with "high IQ"—one that is inherently safe, reliable, and efficient. The smart grid concept perfectly aligns with these goals. With the successful operation of the first UHV pilot project, more experience and results have been gained, laying a solid foundation for the future of smart grid development. Regarding the construction of smart grids, Zhang Wenliang also shared his insights. He pointed out that building a strong smart grid is a highly complex systemic project, requiring not only technical solutions but also in-depth exploration of macro-level policies, social economy, and other soft science issues. Therefore, he stressed the importance of integrating management advantages and actively promoting the research and construction of smart grids in an orderly and systematic manner.
