(2) The rope should limit the fall to a degree that prevents injury. In other words, it needs to stop the fall before the impact force becomes dangerous. If a person falls from a height beyond a certain limit, even if they grab the rope, the force could be too great and cause serious harm or death. Therefore, the length of the rope must be carefully controlled to ensure safety without limiting the worker's movement too much.
Safety ropes are typically evaluated based on two key strength indicators: tensile strength and impact resistance. According to national standards, the tensile strength (maximum pull force) of a safety belt and its components must exceed the longitudinal force exerted by the weight of a falling person.
In terms of impact strength, the rope and its accessories must be able to absorb and dissipate the energy generated during a fall. The magnitude of the impact force mainly depends on the weight of the person and the distance they fall. A longer lanyard increases the fall distance, resulting in a greater impact. Research has shown that an impact force of around 900 kg can cause injury, so the length of the safety rope is kept as short as possible while still allowing for necessary mobility.
According to national regulations, safety rope lengths are usually set between 0.5 and 3 meters. For example, if a worker is suspended at a high altitude with a 3-meter rope, and their weight is 84 kg, the impact load would reach approximately 6.5 kN. This is about one-third of the force that could cause injury, ensuring a high level of safety.
