Does floor heating use gas or electricity?

In recent years, as living standards have improved, floor heating has become increasingly popular in central, southern, and western China. This comfort-driven heating method, once associated with European lifestyles, is now being embraced by more households. However, the growing adoption of such systems comes with challenges, particularly in terms of energy consumption and resource pressure. China’s energy gap continues to widen, with oil import dependency surpassing the 50% safety threshold as early as 2009. Today, it stands at 57.5%, while natural gas import reliance has also exceeded 30%. Water and other essential resources are under increasing strain, prompting government action to manage demand. To address the natural gas shortage, the Chinese government has introduced tiered pricing policies for residential gas use. Several provinces, including Henan, Yunnan, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Hunan, Jiangsu, Guangxi, and Guangdong, have already implemented these measures. The pricing varies across regions: 1. In major cities along the Yangtze River, gas prices range from 2.20 to 2.60 yuan per cubic meter. Cities like Nanjing, Wuxi, and Xuzhou have adopted tiered pricing systems. 2. Northern cities generally enjoy lower gas prices, typically between 2.00 and 2.50 yuan per cubic meter. 3. In southern regions such as Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Guangdong, gas is more expensive, often costing between 3.50 and 4.50 yuan per cubic meter. 4. In western and southwestern cities, gas prices are the lowest, usually between 1.70 and 1.80 yuan per cubic meter. 5. In Zhengzhou, Henan Province, residents pay 1.9 yuan per cubic meter if their monthly usage is below 50 cubic meters, and 2.2 yuan for any excess. 6. Shenzhen has had a tiered gas pricing system since 2008, with rates set at 3.5 yuan and 4.0 yuan per cubic meter. While this can be burdensome for some, electricity prices have been decreasing, encouraging the use of electric alternatives. Air source heat pumps, which use electricity instead of natural gas, are becoming a popular choice. They not only reduce reliance on gas but also offer efficient and safe heating. By replacing traditional gas boilers, they eliminate indoor installation risks and provide cost savings over time. As energy policies evolve, electric heating solutions are likely to play an even bigger role in China's future energy landscape.
