Global PV production capacity exceeds 100GW mark

According to the latest report from EPIA, global photovoltaic (PV) production in 2012 reached 30 GW, matching the previous year’s output and marking another milestone for the solar industry. Despite a slowdown in new installations compared to 2011, the sector continued to show resilience amid ongoing challenges.

The cumulative global PV production has now surpassed 101 GW, with an additional 1-2 GW expected to be added before the end of 2012. This growth highlights the industry's long-term potential, even as it faces headwinds such as overcapacity in polysilicon production and trade disputes among major players.

EPIA’s director, Winfried Hoffmann, commented: “Just a decade ago, no one could have imagined that by 2012, global solar PV production would exceed 100 GW. The industry has come a long way.” He added that while there are still significant challenges, the strong global demand for PV technology proves its relevance and viability in today’s energy landscape.

Despite economic pressures and policy uncertainties, the solar industry managed to replicate its success from 2011. This is a testament to the growing importance of renewable energy and the adaptability of the PV sector.

Another key trend highlighted in the report is the increasing globalization of the solar market. In 2012, 13 GW of solar capacity was installed outside of Europe, up from 8 GW in 2011. Meanwhile, the European market saw a decline, dropping from 23 GW in 2011 to 17 GW in 2012.

Germany remained the largest European market with 7.6 GW, followed by Italy (3.3 GW) and France (1.2 GW). Outside of Europe, China led with at least 3.5 GW, potentially reaching 4.5 GW, while the U.S. and Japan installed 3.2 GW and 2.5 GW respectively.

Hoffmann emphasized that the future of the industry depends on how well it can adapt to new market conditions and develop stable policies that support sustainable growth. “The goal is not just to expand, but to integrate solar power as a mainstream energy source,” he said.
