At the beginning of the new semester at Sichuan Vocational College of Science and Technology in Unity Town, Gifu County, a sophomore student named Zhang Qiang has become a standout figure among his peers. Known for his hands-on skills and innovative thinking, he has attracted a large following on campus—not through fame or popularity, but because of his deep knowledge and passion for renewable energy.
Zhang Qiang, a student majoring in New Energy Engineering, is particularly well-known for building a homemade photovoltaic power station on his own rooftop. This unique project has not only caught the attention of fellow students but also sparked discussions around him during class and study sessions.
Born in a small rural town in Ningnan County, Xichang City, Zhang Qiang showed an early interest in science and technology. After being admitted to Sichuan Vocational College of Science and Technology, he focused on photovoltaic power generation technology. In August of last year, using what he had learned, he built a complete home solar power system on his roof, which now powers his household appliances.
A photovoltaic power station typically includes solar panels, batteries, charge controllers, inverters, and distribution systems. The process can be quite complex, but Zhang Qiang managed to assemble and install the entire system by himself in just three days. Despite the short time frame, the system performs exceptionally well, providing enough electricity for daily household needs—except for high-power devices.
According to Zhang Qiang, the total power output of his system is 330 watts. He estimates that it can save about two kilowatt-hours of electricity per day compared to traditional power sources. Not only is this more cost-effective, but it's also environmentally friendly, reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable living.
What makes Zhang Qiang’s project even more impressive is that he used mostly recycled materials from his internship and discarded parts from photovoltaic production. The total cost was only around 1,000 yuan, making it a highly affordable and practical solution.
Professor Zeng Xinyi, a new energy expert at the college, praised Zhang Qiang’s work, calling it an impressive feat. “Building a solar module manually is no easy task,†said Professor Zeng. “In factories, it takes over 100 million yuan in equipment and 11 production steps. But here, he used scrap materials and applied his knowledge creatively.â€
Zhang Qiang’s homemade system has a market value of approximately 30,000 yuan and a lifespan of 20 to 25 years. His project not only demonstrates technical skill but also highlights the potential for low-cost, sustainable energy solutions. As he continues to explore and innovate, Zhang Qiang is setting an inspiring example for other students and proving that creativity and resourcefulness can turn waste into something valuable.
