Rolling bearing experience determination method

Experience-Based Method for Judging Rolling Bearings

When it comes to assessing the condition of rolling bearings, experience plays a crucial role. Whether you're dealing with radial ball bearings, tapered roller bearings, spherical roller bearings, or thrust ball bearings, there are specific signs and tests that can help determine their usability. For **radial ball bearings**, the first step is to inspect the inner and outer raceways. These should be free from chipping, severe wear, or deep scratches. The raceways should have a smooth, bright surface, and the balls must be perfectly round without any cracks, discoloration, or damage. The cage should not be loose, broken, or worn. To test the bearing, hold the inner ring and spin the outer ring with your other hand. If the bearing rotates smoothly with only a slight rolling sound from the balls, and there's no wobbling or sudden stop, it’s likely in good condition. A small gap between the inner and outer rings and the rolling elements (around 0.005–0.010 mm) is normal. However, if there's excessive play when shaking the rings, or if the gap exceeds 0.03 mm, the bearing should not be used. For **tapered roller bearings**, check whether the rollers and inner raceway are intact and if the cage is not too loose. Ensure that the edges of the inner ring are undamaged and that the outer raceway has no cracks. When the inner ring and roller assembly are placed into the outer ring, the rollers should sit centrally within the raceway, with forward movement not exceeding 1.5 mm. If any of these conditions are not met, the bearing should be discarded. **Spherical roller bearings** and **short cylindrical roller bearings** have separable outer rings. Under normal conditions, the raceways and rollers should show no signs of breakage, pitting, or deep wear. The cage should remain rigid and capable of holding the rollers in place. The clearance between the raceway and the roller should not exceed 0.06 mm. Any deviation from this standard indicates that the bearing may need replacement. When evaluating **thrust ball bearings**, make sure both raceways are undamaged and free from severe wear. The balls should be intact, without cracks or pitting, and the cage should maintain its shape. The balls should be tightly held together and not move freely between the washers. By following these experienced-based methods, you can effectively assess the condition of various types of rolling bearings and ensure safe and efficient operation. Regular inspections and proper maintenance are key to extending the life of bearings and avoiding unexpected failures.
