Choosing sunglasses quality and aesthetics is key

Have you ever wondered how to choose the perfect pair of sunglasses that not only looks good but also protects your eyes? The sun in the sky is like a blazing fire, and while many people are drawn to cheap, stylish sunglasses, it's important to know that not all of them are safe.

Many of us have come across affordable sunglasses in local shops or on the roadside. They may look great, with nice frames and appealing designs, which makes them tempting to buy. However, what most people don’t realize is that low-quality sunglasses can actually be harmful to your eyes. Some of them do not even provide basic UV protection, and instead, they might absorb more ultraviolet rays, leading to serious eye damage or even blindness over time.

To help raise awareness about proper eye protection, experts from the Zhejiang Jiaxing Inspection and Quarantine Bureau shared some key tips on how to choose high-quality sunglasses. They emphasized that when evaluating sunglasses, both aesthetics and quality should be considered. While personal taste plays a role in choosing the style, the quality of the lenses must meet certain standards.

The main focus when selecting sunglasses should be on the lens quality. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards, a good pair of sunglasses should block over 90% of ultraviolet rays while still allowing enough light to pass through for clear vision. Look for labels such as “UV-100 PROTECTION” or “UV-400 PROTECTION” on the lenses. These labels indicate that the sunglasses offer effective UV protection.

Another important factor is the lens’s optical clarity. Sunglasses should not have any "degree" or prescription-like properties. If the lens has a diopter effect exceeding 15%, it can cause dizziness or discomfort when worn.

Additionally, the lens material should be strong and able to withstand impact. Plastic lenses made from materials like propionate or cellulose acetate, resin lenses, and even glass lenses should be tested for durability. A strong lens ensures better safety and comfort during use.

When it comes to color, it’s best to choose a shade that complements your skin tone, face shape, and lifestyle. Neutral colors like black, brown, and gray are generally the safest choices. Gray lenses provide balanced light absorption, making the world look darker without distorting colors. Brown lenses, on the other hand, are great at filtering out blue light, improving contrast and clarity—especially useful in smoggy or foggy conditions.

Choosing the right sunglasses isn’t just about fashion—it’s about protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays. So next time you're shopping for sunglasses, remember to check the UV protection, lens quality, and overall safety before making a purchase. Your eyes will thank you for it.
