Future development of mold steel still needs to work hard

Future development of mold steel still needs to work hard In recent years, the rapid growth of China's machinery, automotive, home appliance, and electronics industries has significantly boosted the demand for molds. This surge in demand has become a major driver for the expansion of China's mold industry. Chinese low-end molds have gained strong global competitiveness, and international buyers are increasingly sourcing from China. At the same time, the transfer of mold production from developed countries to China has accelerated. It is anticipated that in 2013, the Chinese mold industry will experience a boom in both production and demand, with continued growth expected in the coming years. As the working conditions for molds become more demanding, the requirements for mold steel quality have also risen, particularly in terms of purity, isotropy, and overall performance. To meet these evolving demands, mold steel is undergoing significant advancements, moving toward greater diversification, refinement, and productization. Globally, many countries now use advanced processes such as "electric furnace + refining" to produce high-purity mold steels. For large-section forging modules and high-volume steel requirements, vacuum treatment is commonly applied. For mold steels requiring even higher purity, electroslag remelting (ESR) is widely used to enhance cleanliness, density, isotropy, and uniformity while minimizing segregation, resulting in substantial improvements in material quality. To stay competitive, foreign tool steel manufacturers are shifting toward centralized production models. Many companies have engaged in cross-border mergers and acquisitions, establishing comprehensive, technologically advanced die steel production lines and mold steel research centers. As a result, several world-renowned tool steel production and research hubs have emerged. In light of this trend, Chinese companies should follow suit by accelerating enterprise integration and restructuring, increasing investment in R&D, and narrowing the technological gap with their counterparts in developed nations. By doing so, they can enhance their global standing and ensure long-term success in the evolving mold steel market.
