Children's special decoration materials are scarce

The children's room has become a popular choice among many young couples from the post-80s and post-90s generations, creating a special space for their only child. However, due to limitations in materials and technology used in decoration, numerous safety hazards have emerged in the process of decorating children’s rooms. There are few truly safe decoration materials available for children. It seems that any product labeled as "children's furniture" can be sold at a premium simply because it is marketed toward kids. This has become an industry norm, with products like furniture and paint often being overpriced under the guise of being "child-friendly." However, experts reveal that "children's paint" is not a term defined by national standards but rather a marketing strategy created by manufacturers to attract customers. Many companies in the market promote so-called "children's paints," claiming they are eco-friendly and specifically designed for children's rooms and furniture. These paints are significantly more expensive than regular paints. Yet, according to industry sources, paints are generally categorized into three types: furniture paints, toy paints, and wall paints. While furniture and toy paints have strict national standards for harmful substances, wall paints—such as interior wall coatings—only follow general regulations established in 2008. There is no specific standard for "children's paints," making the term more of a marketing tactic than a real guarantee of safety. Similarly, there are no officially designated building materials for children. Even products that claim to be environmentally friendly may still cause pollution if used in excess. Reports suggest that some families believe using "eco-friendly" materials can completely avoid indoor pollution, which is a common misconception. Many companies display various environmental certifications, but the only authoritative mark in China is the "Ten Central" certification, issued by the State Environmental Protection Administration. Only a small number of companies have obtained this certification. As a result, when there are limited safe options for children's rooms, concerns about post-decorating safety naturally arise. In addition to materials, the selection of home products designed specifically for children is also limited, leading to potential layout issues in the child's room. After visiting several children's furniture stores, it became clear that compared to the vast adult furniture market, the variety and styles of children's furniture are still very limited. Some stores only have one children's bed on display, while others offer only a few pieces of furniture, with most designs looking similar. Although new national standards have been introduced to improve safety, such as rounding sharp edges to prevent injuries, certain features—like sharp corners on beds or lack of ventilation in wardrobes—still pose hidden dangers. Safety and environmental protection are the most important factors when choosing children's household products. On the eve of International Children's Day, China released its first "Safety Technical Code for Decoration and Renovation of Children's Rooms," aimed at regulating safe decoration practices in children's spaces. The code includes strict requirements for structural safety, material selection, hazardous substance control, and flame retardancy. While this technical specification provides a standard for children's room decoration, the lack of appropriate children's home products still poses challenges in implementation. Experts recommend that manufacturers develop more safe and eco-friendly products to create a better living environment for children. At the same time, industry professionals advise homeowners to hire third-party environmental testing companies after decoration, place green plants in the room, ensure proper ventilation, and wait at least three months before moving in.
