In recent years, the furniture hardware market in Guangzhou has experienced a noticeable decline, driven by shifting consumer behaviors and evolving industry dynamics. According to a recent report, the total area of home building materials stores in Guangzhou exceeds one million square meters, yet the intense competition among these stores has led to shrinking market space and increasingly challenging business conditions for hardware dealers.
For instance, in the Taipingsha area of Beijing Road, once bustling with hundreds of hardware businesses, only around 30 companies remain today. Similarly, the number of hardware shops along Taikang Road has dropped from over 100 to just 20. The old buildings that housed these shops have been gradually demolished, further reducing the availability of physical retail spaces. Once known as the top hardware store in Guangzhou, the Taikang Decoration Materials City was located in the heart of the Beijing Road commercial district, offering prime real estate and a vibrant business environment. However, after the city's urban renewal efforts accelerated, the original Taikang store was relocated to Jiangnanxi, now called Xintaikang. While this new location offers modern facilities, it lacks the historical charm and customer loyalty of the original site. Additionally, the new Xintaikang is more of a general building materials market, with fewer dedicated hardware stores compared to before.
Another major player in the Guangzhou hardware market is Tianjian, a large-scale decoration materials store that has operated for nearly a decade. Originally situated in a specialized hardware hub, it focused on wholesale operations. During its peak, the store attracted thousands of hardware companies, filling nearly every available space. However, due to its location in Sha Tai Road, which is relatively remote and less accessible, Tianjian never achieved the same level of popularity as other nearby markets. Recently, the author visited the store and found that hardware dealers had decreased by at least 40%, with 20% of the shops either closed or displaying "for lease" signs. Some areas of the store, like Hall B, have been repurposed into a “Cabinet Pavilion†featuring wardrobe and cabinet manufacturers, while Hall D has transformed into a logistics park. This trend suggests that the remaining hardware stores may continue to shrink in numbers.
Meanwhile, neighboring markets such as Tianping Decoration City in Tianhe District and South Bank Road Decoration Materials City in Liwan District have maintained their popularity due to their strategic locations and long-standing histories. These markets remain competitive despite the overall decline in demand for building materials.
Experts attribute the current downturn to broader economic factors, including reduced property transactions and lower demand for construction materials. According to Professor Jin Mo, a senior researcher at Jin Mo Building Materials Network, the oversupply of hardware stores in Guangzhou has led to fierce competition, with an estimated 30% of specialty stores expected to be eliminated from the market. Moreover, Guangzhou is not a manufacturing hub for hardware products. As a result, local manufacturers are few, and downstream industries such as furniture, cabinets, and doors face challenges in sourcing hardware from nearby regions like Foshan, Zhongshan, and Gaoyao.
With improved transportation networks in the Pearl River Delta, merchants can easily visit factories in surrounding areas to inspect product quality and production capabilities. This accessibility has made it unnecessary for many hardware companies to establish physical presence in Guangzhou, allowing them to operate more efficiently through direct factory partnerships.
According to industry research, there are thousands of lock dealers across the country, with declining sales in primary and secondary markets but rising sales in tertiary markets. This shift suggests that only the most well-positioned players—those with prime locations, strong brand recognition, or factory outlets—will dominate the Guangzhou hardware market in the future. These key players are likely to capture the majority of the wholesale and retail trade, reshaping the landscape of the city’s hardware industry.
