Don’t feed these feeds to pigs.

Pigs require a balanced and safe diet to maintain their health and growth. However, certain feeds can be harmful if not handled properly. For example, juicy vegetables, leaves, and grass that are hot, moldy, or cooked for extended periods in pots or cylinders can convert nitrates into nitrites, which may lead to nitrite poisoning in pigs. Fresh sorghum and corn seedlings, along with fresh flax leaves, contain cyanogenic glycosides. These compounds can release toxic hydrogen cyanide when the plants are scummed, piled, mildewed, or frosted. Even small amounts of hydrogen cyanide can be dangerous, especially in regrown seedlings after harvest that have been exposed to frost. Germinated potatoes, along with their stems and leaves, contain solanine, a toxic alkaloid. Exposure to sunlight can increase the concentration of this toxin in the potato's skin and sprouts, leading to paralysis or even death in pigs if consumed. Sweet potatoes affected by black spot disease contain mycotoxins, which are harmful to both humans and animals. Feeding these to pigs can cause serious health issues. Raw beans such as soybeans, black beans, peas, and broad beans contain anti-trypsin and other antinutritional factors that reduce feed palatability and digestibility. This can lead to digestive problems, diarrhea, and poor weight gain. Therefore, they should always be cooked before feeding. Undecoked rapeseed cake contains glucosinolates and tannins. When broken down by enzymes, glucosinolates can produce isothiocyanates, which are toxic and may cause digestive issues like constipation. Moldy feeds, including high-quality cakes, corn, gluten, and compound feeds, often contain harmful fungi such as Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus oryzae. These molds can produce toxins that are dangerous to pigs when consumed. Distiller’s grains, a byproduct of the alcohol industry, can be used in pig feed but must be carefully controlled. Exceeding 30% of the diet in distiller’s grains may lead to alcoholism in pigs, causing serious health complications. By understanding these risks and managing feed properly, farmers can ensure the safety and well-being of their livestock. Always check feed quality, avoid moldy or improperly processed materials, and follow recommended feeding guidelines to prevent poisoning and promote healthy growth.
