According to the Jiangxi Science and Technology Department, a company based in Jiangxi has made a groundbreaking achievement by successfully developing the "GBM Gearless Crane." This innovative crane integrates the functions of a motor, reducer, reel, and transmission system, overcoming a long-standing technical challenge that has hindered advanced manufacturing nations in Europe and America for over 80 years.
The crane was developed by Jiangxi Gongyi Machinery Co., Ltd., which redefined the traditional four-beam crane design. The technology has been recognized as the first major technical equipment demonstration project under China's industrial initiative, alongside projects involving detectors and cloud computing systems.
Yu Liansheng, Chairman of Gongyi Machinery Co., Ltd., explained that conventional cranes rely on gearboxes. Over time, especially under heavy and continuous use, the alignment of components shifts, leading to oil leaks, excessive noise, and gear damage. Since the 1930s, European and American countries have attempted to develop gearless crane technology but failed to achieve significant progress.
At the heart of the GBM Gearless Crane is its lifting trolley, which is compact and lightweight. For example, a 32-ton lifting trolley in a traditional crane weighs 10.97 tons and occupies 16.49 cubic meters, while the GBM version only weighs 5.46 tons and takes up 7.56 cubic meters — reducing both weight and volume by more than 50%. Moreover, it offers superior safety performance, overload protection, error correction, and millimeter-level intelligent control, setting new global standards.
To date, the device has secured over 20 domestic and international patents. Its applications extend beyond civil and industrial sectors like elevators and cranes, reaching critical military fields such as helicopters, submarines, and tanks. This innovation marks a major leap forward in engineering and highlights China’s growing influence in advanced manufacturing technologies.
