Numerical control (NC) technology is the cornerstone of advanced manufacturing, playing a vital role in driving industrial development and national competitiveness. A country's level of NC technology reflects its overall industrial modernization and economic strength. Beyond its economic value, NC technology holds strategic importance, influencing national security and technological independence. Despite rapid progress, China still faces significant challenges in this area. Many Chinese enterprises rely heavily on imported CNC machine tools and systems, which not only come with high costs but also expose them to external control and supply chain vulnerabilities.
Moreover, the maintenance of existing CNC equipment remains inadequate, with high expenses for imported spare parts and limited technical support. Some imported CNC systems have failed or remain unused due to compatibility issues, lack of training, or insufficient infrastructure. As a result, the current adoption rate of CNC machines in Chinese enterprises is less than 5%, with most companies still using outdated traditional machinery. These older tools are inefficient, unable to meet the demands of modern production processes, especially for high-tech products requiring precision and speed.
To address these challenges and reduce reliance on foreign technology, it has become both necessary and inevitable to upgrade a large number of conventional machine tools into CNC systems. This transformation not only helps cut costs in the long run but also unlocks the hidden potential of existing equipment, improving productivity and supporting sustainable industrial growth. By investing in domestic NC capabilities, China can strengthen its manufacturing foundation and move toward greater technological self-reliance.
