Hooks are a vital part of most rigging setups. Different types of hooks serve various purposes, and choosing the right one depends on the application. Some hooks excel at securing loads, while others are better suited for lifting tasks. In today's video, we'll explore the different kinds of hooks and their ideal uses.
Latch or No Latch?
Safety latch hooks are the industry standard for rigging operations. According to OSHA, "Latch-equipped hooks shall be used unless the application makes the use of the latch impractical or unnecessary." Although we do offer non-safety hooks online, this article will focus primarily on safety-latch hooks or those where a safety latch might hinder operation.
Working Load Limits and Dimensions

The size and shape of most hooks are determined by their Working Load Limit (WLL). Our website offers hook capacities ranging from 220 lbs. up to 7 tons. Additionally, the diameter and opening of the hook are important considerations. Always measure the rigging tools and fittings intended to connect to the hook, then cross-reference these measurements with the product specifications to select the appropriate hook for your needs.
Safety Hoist Hook

This versatile hook is suitable for a wide range of lifting and pulling applications. It's often carried by rigging specialists due to its ease of use. Safety hoist hooks can be quickly attached and detached from other rigging components, making them one of our most popular offerings.
Swivel Hoist Hooks

These hooks function similarly to standard hoist hooks but include an integrated swivel at the top. This feature allows you to adjust the hook's orientation before lifting. However, these hooks should not be rotated while under load. Make sure the swivel is set to the desired position before beginning the lift.
Grab Hooks

Grab hooks are commonly found at the ends of chains or ratchet load binders for securing and transporting loads. These hooks have an opening that corresponds to a specific chain size (e.g., Grade-70 Transport Chain). Instead of an eye or swivel, they feature a clevis-style attachment, making them easy to secure to transport chains and various binders.
Can I Replace the Safety Latch on Safety Hooks?
Safety latches are prone to wear and tear and can bend or break off, rendering them inoperable. Since this component isn't load-bearing, it can be replaced without affecting the hook's overall performance. First, inspect the hook for any additional damage such as warping or cracks. If the hook passes inspection, look for a third-party replacement kit. Note that we at E-Rigging currently do not offer replacement latch kits.
Can I Replace the Safety Hook on My Hoist or Puller?

Many of our hooks are compatible with tools like lever load hoists or cable pullers. Replacing a hook on such equipment requires checking for any additional damage. If the hoist or puller is damaged beyond repair, it should be sent to a professional for servicing or replaced. If only the hook is damaged, check if it can be swapped out. Often, the hook is held in place by a pin and can be replaced easily with a similar model. If the hook is permanently attached to the cable or chain, replacing the entire unit may be necessary.
