On Monday, the Director-General of the Russian Nuclear Energy Agency, Sergei Kiriyenko, revealed that negotiations with India have progressed significantly, marking a major step forward in the development of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant. He confirmed that technical coordination for the construction of the third and fourth units—part of the second phase of the project—has been finalized.
Kiriyenko emphasized that Russia is fully committed to incorporating India's feedback into the planning process and highlighted that all financial concerns have been resolved. He also mentioned that India has expressed its intention to submit an application for the commissioning of the second unit of the first phase, which is nearly complete, by the summer of 2013.
In addition, Kiriyenko reiterated that the Kudankulam plant is recognized as one of the safest nuclear facilities globally, thanks to advanced safety measures and strict regulatory compliance. The project is seen as a cornerstone of Indo-Russian cooperation in the energy sector.
Earlier this year, Russia and India signed a protocol outlining Moscow’s commitment to provide a $4.2 billion intergovernmental loan to support the construction of units 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam plant. This funding is expected to play a crucial role in accelerating the project’s timeline and ensuring its long-term success.
