The "2012 China Interior Design Week" featured a significant event—the "Green Design and Environmental Protection Materials Summit." Hosted by the China Interior Decoration Association, the China Indoor Environment Monitoring Working Committee, the Bamboo Material Decoration Application and Promotion Center, and the National Indoor Environment and Indoor Environmental Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, the summit took place at the International Trade Hotel in Beijing. Industry professionals from across the country, including interior designers, company representatives, and experts in eco-friendly materials, gathered to discuss the future of sustainable design.
During the forum, renowned international designer Pekka Saminen from Finland, Professor Zhou Haoming from Tsinghua University's School of Fine Arts, and Song Guangsheng, director of the National Indoor Environment and Indoor Environmental Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, shared their insights on the use of new environmental protection materials in landmark projects. Their discussions covered innovative design concepts and practical applications, offering valuable learning opportunities for participants, including design firms, material suppliers, research institutions, and academic organizations.
Pekka Saminen, known for his work on the Wuxi Grand Theatre, made headlines by using bamboo—a traditional Chinese material—instead of costly wood for the theater’s interior. This bold choice turned the Wuxi Grand Theatre into the world’s largest structure to feature large-scale bamboo decoration, setting a global benchmark for bamboo usage in architectural design. At the event, Saminen shared his creative vision and emphasized the potential of bamboo as a sustainable, green alternative that could gain widespread acceptance among designers.
To recognize his contributions, the China Interior Decoration Association and the National Indoor Environment and Indoor Environmental Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Center presented Pekka Saminen with the first-ever "China Bamboo Decoration Award."
Song Guangsheng highlighted the importance of bamboo in promoting low-carbon interior design, noting that the association has established a dedicated center to guide its application. He pointed out that replacing wood with bamboo helps conserve forest resources and represents a promising direction for the future of the interior and furniture industries. The Wuxi Grand Theatre project, designed by Saminen, is a pioneering example of using bamboo in large public buildings, offering a model for similar projects worldwide.
The summit also addressed broader topics, such as the development of green design, the application of environmentally friendly wall materials, and the growth of the green lighting industry. Representatives from companies like Lele Optoelectronics Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Taian Biyuan Board Industry Co., Ltd., and Hunan Wenxiang Carbon-based Environmental Protection Material Co., Ltd. shared their perspectives on these emerging trends.
Following the conference, efforts to promote green and low-carbon materials in interior design will continue through ongoing collaborations with Pekka Saminen and the China Interior Design Week. A dedicated exhibition and design display center will further support the integration of eco-friendly materials into the industry.
