India nuclear power project won 26.2 billion ** On Monday, the Director-General of the Russian Nuclear Energy Agency, Sergei Kiriyenko, announced that negotiations with India have progressed significantly regarding the construction of the third and fourth units at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. He confirmed that technical coordination for the second phase of the project has been completed, marking a major step forward in the collaboration between Russia and India. Kiriyenko emphasized that the Russian side is open to considering all suggestions from India and highlighted that all cost-related issues have been resolved. He also mentioned that India is planning to apply for the commissioning of the second unit of the first-phase project, which is nearly complete, during the summer of 2013. Reiterating the importance of the project, Kiriyenko stated that the Kudankulam plant is recognized as one of the safest nuclear facilities globally, thanks to advanced safety systems and strict regulatory standards. Earlier this year, Russia and India signed a protocol outlining Moscow’s commitment to provide an intergovernmental agreement to support the construction of Units 3 and 4 at Kudankulam. Under the agreement, Russia will supply $4.2 billion (approximately 2.62 billion U.S. dollars) in export credits to facilitate the development of the new units. This partnership not only strengthens energy cooperation between the two nations but also underscores their long-term strategic relationship in the field of nuclear technology. The project is expected to play a key role in meeting India's growing energy demands while promoting clean and sustainable power generation.
