The "2012 China Interior Design Week" featured a significant event—the "Green Design and Environmental Protection Materials Summit." Hosted by the China Interior Decoration Association, the China Indoor Environment Monitoring Working Committee, the Bamboo Material Decoration Application and Promotion Center, and the National Indoor Environment and Indoor Environmental Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, the summit took place at the International Trade Hotel in Beijing. Industry leaders, interior designers, representatives from decoration companies, and experts in eco-friendly materials gathered to explore new trends and innovations in sustainable design.
At the forum, renowned international designer Pekka Saminen from Finland, Professor Zhou Haoming from Tsinghua University's School of Fine Arts, and Song Guangsheng, director of the National Indoor Environment and Indoor Environmental Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, shared insights on the application of new environmental protection materials in landmark projects. Their discussions offered valuable learning opportunities for participants, including designers, industry representatives, research institutions, and academic institutions.
Pekka Saminen, known for his work on the Wuxi Grand Theatre, made headlines by using bamboo—a traditional Chinese material—instead of expensive wood for the theater’s interior. This bold choice not only highlighted the aesthetic and structural potential of bamboo but also positioned the Wuxi Grand Theatre as the world's largest structure to feature extensive bamboo decoration. His presentation at the forum emphasized the importance of integrating China's abundant bamboo resources into global green design practices.
To recognize his contributions, the China Interior Decoration Association and the National Indoor Environment and Indoor Environmental Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Center presented Pekka Saminen with the first-ever "China Bamboo Decoration Award."
Song Guangsheng, the forum's director, noted that bamboo has become a key focus for promoting low-carbon interior design in recent years. A dedicated center for bamboo decoration has been established to guide its use. By replacing wood with bamboo, the industry can help conserve forest resources. He believes that the widespread adoption of bamboo in interior design represents a promising direction for the future of the industry.
The forum also covered topics such as the development of green and low-carbon materials, the use of carbon-based wall surfaces, and advancements in eco-friendly lighting. Representatives from companies like Lele Optoelectronics Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Taian Biyuan Board Industry Co., Ltd., and Hunan Wenxiang Carbon-based Environmental Protection Material Co., Ltd. shared their perspectives on these emerging trends.
Following the event, efforts to promote green and low-carbon materials in the interior design sector will continue through ongoing collaborations with Pekka Saminen and the China Interior Design Week, including exhibitions and design displays across the country.
