The Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, established in 1948 as a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization, is renowned for hosting one of the largest annual showcase houses in the United States. In 2020, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design featured a Federal Country estate located in Arcadia, California, constructed in 1937 and designed by the esteemed Hollywood architect Gerard R. Colcord. Each room in this Federal-Revival style home was curated by 17 distinct interior designers, among them Jake Galang of Ilustracion by Jake, Corp., who transformed the former sewing room into a stunning and highly practical laundry room. To learn more about her journey, check out our interview:
**Was this your first time participating independently in the Pasadena Showcase House?**
Absolutely! This was my first time leading the creative process on my own, and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. It allowed me the freedom to express my personal style and creativity. Several years ago, while working under my mentor and her collaborators, they were involved in the event. Although I had a glimpse into what it was like to participate in a showhouse, being at the forefront and spearheading the design was a wholly different experience.

**What inspired your vision for the upstairs laundry room, and did the homeowners have specific requests for that space?**
As I walked through the house, I was captivated by the symmetry of this room. The dormer window sat perfectly centered, creating a striking architectural focal point. While the original cabinetry was charming, we aimed to enhance its functionality. I retained the layout of the millwork and added a built-in bench to complement the window. The homeowners had the option to convert the former sewing room/nursery into either a craft room or a second laundry area. I provided conceptual and detailed plans for both options, but secretly hoped they'd choose the laundry room since my design approach would bring something unexpected to the table. Thankfully, they selected the laundry room.

**Can you describe your overall design philosophy? How does it align with the aesthetic of the showcase home?**
My design philosophy blends traditional styles with contemporary trends. The Pasadena Showcase 2020 is a 1937 Federal Country estate, filled with vintage details such as cased openings, stringer stairs, intricate hardwood floor patterns, dormer windows, and full-wall wallpapers. To modernize the space while honoring its heritage, I incorporated bohemian geometric patterns and satin brass accents. My goal was to harmonize classic elements with a fresh, timeless palette.

**What led you to choose the Waterstone Contemporary PLP Faucet, and why did you opt for the Satin Brass finish?**
I was immediately drawn to the Waterstone Contemporary PLP faucet because of its sleek, minimalist base and elongated spout that culminates in an industrial-style pull-down spray. The blend of vintage charm and modern functionality perfectly aligned with my vision. Additionally, the faucet's height—16 inches—was ideal for my design, especially since the farmhouse sink was positioned beneath a sloped ceiling. I've worked extensively with Waterstone products in my custom projects and appreciate their quality, craftsmanship, and sustainable practices. Choosing Satin Brass was essential; it complements my chosen cabinet hardware and lighting, while also reflecting my commitment to eco-conscious design.

**The laundry room door is particularly innovative, featuring integrated shelves and a hidden pullout hamper. What other organizational features did you include in the design?**
Given the limited space—approximately 140 square feet—I maximized functionality by installing a recessed ironing board, stacking a compact washer and ventless dryer, adding pullout storage under the sink, and incorporating open shelves, pigeon-hole cubbies, and full-height cabinets. Vertical storage solutions were key to optimizing every inch of the room.

**Were there any challenges during the design process, and how did you overcome them?**
One major challenge was transforming a former sewing room with no existing plumbing or venting for appliances. However, collaborating with a skilled team and leveraging innovative resources helped me devise a solution. I stacked a compact washer and ventless dryer, utilized the Contemporary PLP prep-size faucet to create additional shelf space above the sloped ceiling, and implemented vertical storage wherever possible. Every inch of space counted!

**Any advice for those renovating their own laundry rooms? Are there specific details, like faucets, that shouldn't be overlooked?**
When renovating a laundry room, selecting high-quality appliances and fixtures is crucial. Research the brand's history and read customer reviews to ensure reliability. A faucet, in particular, is one of the most frequently used items in a laundry room, so durability and functionality are paramount. Consider factors like size, style, finish, and intended use. It must not only look great but also feel solid and perform well over time.
By blending creativity, practicality, and sustainability, even a small laundry room can become a functional masterpiece.
