China Southern Power Grid solves 2.25 million people's electricity problem

In the past decade, China Southern Power Grid has made significant progress in power infrastructure development. The company has invested a total of 524.1 billion yuan into building and upgrading the power grid, which is more than three times the cumulative investment since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 2002. This massive investment has helped expand the grid significantly, enabling the transmission of 474.1 billion kWh of electricity over the years. The network now includes 13 major channels—known as “eight exchanges and five direct lines”—spanning thousands of kilometers, connecting five provinces and regions. China Southern Power Grid also played a key role in improving agricultural power management systems, solving power shortages for 2.25 million people who previously had no access to electricity. At its tenth-anniversary conference on December 29, the company highlighted its achievements under the leadership of Chairman Zhao Jianguo. He emphasized that the unified grid system has created a stable, large-scale, long-distance, ultra-high-voltage transmission network that supports high-speed economic growth in the southern provinces, with GDP growth exceeding 12% in some areas. When it was established ten years ago, China Southern Power Grid took over five southern provinces—regions known for severe power shortages. At the time, these areas accounted for nearly 70% of Guangdong's GDP, but power shortages were holding back economic progress. The interconnections between Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, and Guangdong were weak, with only four “three-way intersections” and a limited transmission capacity of 3.7 million kilowatts. Hainan, meanwhile, operated as an isolated island grid. A major milestone came in 2009 when Hainan Power Grid finally connected to the main grid of China Southern Power Grid. The 500 kV Hainan Interconnection Project, featuring Asia’s first and the world’s second 500 kV AC submarine cable, allowed the mainland grid to reach Hainan through the Qiongzhou Strait. This marked a turning point in the region’s energy development. Today, the network continues to grow. Approximately half of Hong Kong’s electricity demand is met through the Southern Power Grid’s transmission system, while Macao receives about 90% of its electricity from the same network, with 100% reliability. This ensures that both cities remain vibrant and well-powered. As a key player in the Greater Mekong Subregion Power Cooperation Project, China Southern Power Grid has extended its influence beyond China, establishing connections with power grids in Myanmar, Vietnam, and Laos. Chairman Zhao Jianguo noted that while international expansion is challenging, it is essential for regional development and will continue to be a priority. Looking ahead, China Southern Power Grid has set clear strategic goals for the next decade. By 2020, the company aims to become an internationally advanced power enterprise, supporting the vision of a "Beautiful China" and serving as a vital indicator of operations for its 318,000 employees.
