China Southern Power Grid solves 2.25 million people's electricity problem

In the past ten years, China Southern Power Grid has made remarkable progress in power infrastructure development, investing a total of 524.1 billion yuan to build and upgrade its grid system. This investment is more than three times the total amount spent since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 2002. Over this period, the company has accumulated electricity sales of 474.1 billion kWh, establishing a vast network that includes 13 major transmission corridors spanning thousands of kilometers. These efforts have significantly improved power supply in five provinces, rationalizing agricultural power management and solving electricity issues for 2.25 million people. On December 29, China Southern Power Grid celebrated its tenth anniversary, reflecting on its journey as a key player in China's energy sector. According to Zhao Jianguo, the company's chairman, the unified grid across the five southern provinces has become a safe, stable, and high-capacity system capable of supporting rapid economic growth—over 12% GDP expansion in the region. The company also played a crucial role in integrating regional grids, strengthening cross-provincial connections, and improving transmission capacity. Ten years ago, when the company was established, it faced significant challenges. It took over five southern provinces and regions, which were among the most energy-deficient areas in China. At the time, these regions accounted for nearly 70% of Guangdong's economic output, but power shortages were holding back development. The interconnections between Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, and Guangdong were weak, with only four "three-way intersections" and limited transmission capacity of just 3.7 million kilowatts. Hainan's grid operated as an isolated system, known as the "island grid." In 2009, Hainan finally joined the main grid through the 500 kV Hainan Interconnection Project, Asia's first and the world's second 500 kV AC submarine cable. This project connected Hainan's grid to the mainland, marking a major milestone in regional power integration. Today, the South China Power Grid continues to expand its reach. Approximately half of Hong Kong's electricity needs are met through the company's transmission network, while Macao receives about 90% of its power, with 100% reliability. This ensures that both cities remain shining examples of stability and prosperity. As the Chinese representative in the Greater Mekong Subregion Power Cooperation, China Southern Power Grid has facilitated cross-border power links with countries like Myanmar, Vietnam, and Laos. Zhao Jianguo emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, “Going global isn't easy, but it's necessary for both responsibility and economic development. We will continue to push forward.” Looking ahead, the company has set clear strategic goals: by 2020, it aims to become an internationally advanced power grid enterprise, providing sustainable and green energy support for the vision of a "Beautiful China." This goal serves as a guiding force for the operations of its 318,000 employees across the region.
