Contrast test of Boshan yeast selenium and sodium selenite mice

**Knot Question Newspaper Report** Test No.: Boshan Selenium-Enriched Yeast and Sodium Selenite Mice Feeding Comparison Test - 20120820 Design: Su Spring Program Review: Pan Army President Open Questioner: Su Spring Executive: Su Spring Executive Contact Number: 15920445735 On-Site Contact Number: 13160862194 Open Question Date: November 30, 2012 **Contrast Test of Boshan Selenium-Enriched Yeast and Sodium Selenite in Mice** **First, Purpose of the Test** The objective of this test was to compare the effects of selenium-enriched yeast and sodium selenite on blood selenium levels and muscle selenium deposition in mice. It also aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using selenium-enriched yeast as a potential supplement for animal models. **Second, Materials and Methods** Experimental animals were selected: 4–5-week-old mice with similar weight (about 20g), good health status, and total of 40 mice. The experiment included three treatment groups: one control group (no added Se diet), one selenium-enriched yeast group (Jiaboshan Se 0.2mg/kg diet), and one inorganic selenium group (sodium selenite Se 0.2mg/kg diet). Each group had 3 replicates, with 6 mice per replicate. All animals were purchased from Zhongshan University. Feeding management: Free feeding and drinking. The experiment started on August 25, 2012, and lasted for 32 days. The environment was maintained at 25°C, with daily cage cleaning to ensure hygiene. Daily observations were made to monitor the health condition of the mice. The experiment was conducted in the Guangzhou Science City Experimental Animal Room. **Third, Experimental Results** Body weight: No significant differences were observed in appearance, mental state, or body weight during the feeding period (Fig. 1). However, the control group showed larger individuals at the end of the test. The results are summarized in Table 1. **Determination of Selenium Content in Mouse Blood** Blood samples (1 ml) were collected in a beaker with anticoagulant (heparin) and mixed with acid for digestion. Selenium content was measured using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results are presented in Table 2. **Conclusion** The study demonstrated that both selenium-enriched yeast and sodium selenite effectively increased selenium levels in mice. However, selenium-enriched yeast showed better bioavailability and muscle deposition efficiency, suggesting it could be a more effective selenium source for animal nutrition. Further research is recommended to confirm these findings in different animal models.
